Part of the Newark Earthworks complex, this 50-foot long segment
is one side of a large square enclosure which was an important feature of the original
complex. The geometrical enclosures found at Newark were used by the Hopewell Indians (100
BC-AD 500) for social and religious purposes. Octagon State Memorial and Moundbuilders
State Memorial are both additional local sites that preserve other features of this
majestic remnant of Prehistoric Ohio.
Although the expansion of the city of Newark has obliterated large portions of the
mounds and walls of the original earthworks, important sections are preserved.
LOCATION
Wright Earthworks is at the intersection of James and Waldo streets just west of Union
Street (State Route 29) in Newark, in Licking County.
