"The Fort was a rectangle, following the bank of the river which there runs north-west. There was a gate in each end of the stockade which was built of logs about fifteen feet long, set four feet in the ground. There was a block house in each corner, the second story of which protruded over the wall below.

It is rather hard from this date to imagine how things were then and just how they managed to do so much and accommodate so many people in so small a place, for we are told that they wintered though the first winter twelve hundred horse. Of the number of men we know little, but there is evidence of a goodly number."

History of Fort Amanda

Along the bank of the Auglaize River this quiet roadside park marks the site of a supply fort built during the War of 1812.

Colonel Robert Pogue built the fort and probably named it after his daughter Amanda. It was one of several forts constructed by order of General William Henry Harrison to protect the northwest from British invasion. The fort also served as a hospital and the graves of 75 men who died in it are located here. A 50-foot obelisk perpetuates the memory of the men who served here.

LOCATION

Fort Amanda is on the west bank of the Auglaize River 9 miles northwest of Wapakoneta along State Route 198 in Auglaize County.
